Dragonflies belong to an ancient group of insects that were around long before dinosaurs.
With two pairs of see-through wings, they can hover, soar, zigzag and even fly backwards.
A dragonfly uses its aerobatic skills to snatch other insects in mid-air with its legs. Two huge compound eyes, which are extremely sensitive to movement, enable it to see in all directions for likely prey.
Dragonfly nymphs, known as 'mud-eyes', have gills so that they can live and eat underwater – sometimes for many years.
Eventually, they crawl out of the water and the adult dragonflies break free of their exoskeletons.
They are one of the fastest flying insects on earth reaching top speeds of up to 60 kmph.
