Redbacks are common in backyards where they are found under logs and rocks, on outdoor furniture and in sheds.

About one centimetre long, the female is easiest to spot. Jet black in colour, she has a red mark on her round abdomen. Male redbacks are much smaller. Females eat males after mating!

A redback spider makes a tangled web with a funnel-like hideaway at the back. The sticky web traps a variety of prey from insects to small lizards.
Learn to recognise the web and where redbacks might lurk in your backyard to avoid getting bitten. A redback spider bite is very venomous and can be quite dangerous for some people.

Warning! If you are bitten, seek medical attention immediately. Antivenom is effective against the bite of a redback spider.
