Scientific name:

Tachyglossus aculeatus meaning “spiny fast tongue”

The Echidna, or spiny anteater, is a monotreme, or egg-laying mammal. Heavily armoured with sharp spines for protection, this shy animal gathers food with its long, sticky tongue.  During the breeding season, females develop a pouch to incubate their eggs.
