Probosciger aterrimus meaning “very black snout-bearer”

Australia’s largest Cockatoo is a spectacular bird with black plumage, a huge beak, a magnificent head crest and red cheeks that change colour when it is alarmed.  It is also very noisy, using screeches, cries, grunts and whistles to communicate.
