About the Young Collectors website

Young Collectors is a collector coin series designed specially for children.  It was introduced by The Perth Mint in 2008 to encourage children to engage in the traditional hobby of coin collecting.

The Young Collector website is also designed for children.  It contains details about the latest Young Collectors release, provides information about how to start a coin collection, tells children how to care for coins, and tells them about the tools that they will need to begin collecting.

Children will also learn about the history of The Perth Mint, discover the different sorts of coins they can collect, play games, and take part in exciting competitions.

What are the benefits of coin collecting?

Educational benefits

Coin collecting has strong educational links with history, geography, society, science and mathematics. For instance, coins that mark significant historical events will enlighten children on the history of Australia and other countries. Children will learn to appreciate the country in which they live, and are likely to want to discover more about it.

Intricate coin designs will captivate children’s attention and get them interested in nature, culture, history and national icons, encouraging them to read more and search for information.

Personal development

Coin collecting provides various personal benefits for children. It will improve their organisational skills while they learn to sort, organize and safe keep their collections.

As they grow up, many children will have pride in their coin collections and each coin will remind them of a particular moment in their childhood.

Coin collecting can also improve children’s communication skills with peers and family members, as they are likely to want to discuss their collections with others.

Coin collecting will improve children’s vocabulary as they learn special ‘coin collecting’ terms.

The traditional hobby of coin collecting will also improve children’s research skills as they will become more inquisitive to discover the story behind each coin.

Coin collecting can also boost children’s self-confidence, as they become proud of something that they own.

Specialised knowledge

The whole coin making process is unique and educational. To make a coin requires extraordinary skills and craftsmanship.  A classroom activity with an interesting artistic edge would be to create a ‘Design Your Own Coin’ project.

Understanding the value of money

Coin collecting can teach children about money. They will learn about the economy, inflation and investment in precious metals, as well as rare, modern and historic coins.  Coin collecting also teaches children to have an appreciation for currency and respect for money.
